Factotum Bag Kit

Keep all of your essentials close at hand in this simplified satchel style bag - Novembers g&g Sewing Society kit includes everything you need to make the Merchant and Mills Factotum Bag in a British Millerain, water repellant cotton canvas.

This handy, cross body bag is compact but copious. It has been designed to hold all of your daily essentials with one large main compartment closed with a metal tooth zip and two front gusseted pockets, kept closed by a build in tuck of fabric.

The cotton webbing strap is attached to the bag with co-ordinating tubular rivets and flat edges rectangular ring with an antique brass finish to tie it in with the strong and sturdy YKK zip that matches the main fabric colour.

This kit would be a lovely gift idea, as a gift itself or already stitched up for someone special!

We have chosen a hard wearing, water resistant British Millerain cotton canvas, made in the UK, in a choice of three colour-ways (Gold, Navy and Khaki) with a fun, co-ordinating art gallery cotton lining, but the bag could easily be re-made again and again in a range of different fabrics!

We have chosen 3 different classic and wearable colours of 100% cotton canvas with a wax finish made here in the UK and the British Millerain Mill.

The Gold fabric has a dipped wax finish, meaning it has a dryer feel that looks more or less identical on each side of the fabric.

The Navy and Khaki fabric has a coated wax finish, making one side more waxy than the other and giving a very slightly wetter finish.

There are two shades of the Khaki colour, one darker than the other. The stock we received was from two different dye batches leading to a difference in colour tone. Please see the gallery so images of the two shades together. Note that the sample made up and modelled is in the Khaki colour, NOT the 'Dark Khaki'.

Paired with each colour of the waxed cotton canvas is a beautiful print from the designer Art Gallery collections. This 100% cotton fabric will add a fun twist to the inside of the bag and make it extra special and unique. See the images in the gallery above for the pairings of colours, prints and webbing matches.

This bag comes in one size and the finished dimensions are approx length 20cm, width 30cm, depth at widest point 12cm.

Alongside the purchase of this kit you will receive access to a series of 2 of Laurens exclusive YouTube videos to be used alongside the pattern instructions.

She shares her hints and tips for getting a lovely finish including working with waxed cotton canvas, getting a neat, crisp finish, inserting a zip and adding extra top stitching, creating the 3D shape of the bag, adjusting the length of the strap, inserting rivets and much more!

The videos have over 30 minutes of footage, sectioned out with time stamps/chapters for easy reference and navigation.

The link to the video will be contained in your order confirmation email along with the pdf files, please please file this safely for future reference.

This project is aimed at the intermediate level.

The trickiest part is creating and sewing on the gusseted pockets. Inserting the zip is fairly straight forward.

To complete this project successfully you'll need a regular sewing machine along with Lauren's essential recommended sewing tools.

An Overlocker is not required as the bag is lined and therefore finishing off the seam allowances is not required.

A whole punch or tailors awl is needed for punching a hole in the strap prior to inserting the rivets.

You will need a hammer and a hard flat surface for hammering in and securing the tubular rivets to secure the strap in place.

Your kit will be wrapped in tissue and beautifully presented in recyclable packaging.

We will aim to dispatch all kits as soon as possible after orders are placed, but be aware it could take up to a few weeks. As Sewing Society kits are processed and shipped from a different location to the shop, we are unable to group together kit orders with past or subsequent orders or combine orders retrospectively.
