An Autumn Woodland: The Story Behind Our New Shop Window

There’s always a bit of excitement in the shop when Jo starts working on a new window. We usually know the general theme and the fabrics or garments that are going into it, but I absolutely love seeing how she takes those starting points and turns them into a whole little world of their own.

For our latest autumn window, Jo took inspiration from my new Scottish inspired fabric collection and the ideas of woodland walks, foraging, pumpkins, starry skies and magical harvest moonlight.

The result is a window that feels wonderfully autumnal, with lots of little details to spot amongst the handmade garments.

An Autumn Walk Through the Woods

Jo's starting point was that lovely feeling of heading out for a walk on a crisp autumn day.

Think changing leaves, foraging amongst the trees and all those colours and textures you start to notice as the seasons change.

As your eye travels around the window, the scene gradually takes you from the woodland floor right up into the night sky, with stars and moons hanging overhead.

I love a window where you notice something different every time you look at it, and there are so many little details tucked into this one.

The Thora Takes Centre Stage

At the heart of our autumn window is the Thora Top & Dress, celebrating the launch of my new Thora Sleeve Expansion Pack and new exclusive fabrics.

With four new sleeve options to choose from, the window shows just how different the Thora can look simply by switching up the sleeve and fabric.

Want to know more about the Afterlight and Wild Rowan designs featured in the window? I’ve shared the inspiration and little details behind them in a separate blog.

Burgundy Wild Rowan Thora Top

Starting over on the left, you’ll spot my Burgundy Wild Rowan Thora Top nestled amongst the autumn leaves and pumpkins.

I made this one with the new Short Sleeve from the Thora Sleeve Expansion. I love how such a simple change gives the Thora a completely different feel, with a little more coverage than the original cap sleeve while still keeping that easy shape I love.

And that rich burgundy Wild Rowan couldn’t feel more at home in our autumn woodland! 🍂

Afterlight Thora Dress

Moving along the window, we come to my Afterlight Thora Dress, and this one really brings the starry night part of Jo’s woodland scene to life. ✨

I love how the deep inky blues and scattered celestial details feel amongst the stars and moons hanging above, almost as though the night sky has made its way into the window itself.

For this version, I chose the Narrow Cuff Sleeve, which gives the Thora a little more volume and movement while still keeping that lovely easy to wear shape.

Navy Wild Rowan Thora

Next along is my Navy Wild Rowan Thora Dress, bringing even more of those woodland details into the window. 🍂

For this version, I used our exclusive Navy Wild Rowan Viscose Jacquard and added the Long Narrow Cuff Sleeve from the Thora Sleeve Expansion Pack. I love how the full length sleeve changes the feel of the Thora, giving me more coverage for autumn and winter while keeping that relaxed, easy to wear shape.

The rich navy, rowan berries and leafy details feel right at home amongst Jo’s autumn woodland scene too.

Merlot pleated cuff sleeve

And next along is another Thora, this time in our rich Merlot Viscose Twill. 🍷

For this version, I added the Pleated Cuff Sleeve from the Thora Sleeve Expansion Pack, and this really is the special one! There’s beautiful fullness gathered into both the sleeve head and wrist, before you get to that gorgeous deep cuff.

The cuff itself is made up of five pleats, with covered buttons and delicate thread loops adding those extra little details that make it feel really considered. It’s the kind of sleeve that looks impressive, but is also such a satisfying detail to sew.

I love how the rich Merlot lets all that beautiful sleeve detail take centre stage amongst the autumn colours in the window.

And of course, handmade jeans!

You’ll spot that Jo has paired the Thora Tops in the window with handmade jeans. I LOVE making my own jeans. There’s something beyond satisfying about taking the time to get the fit just right and ending up with a pair that feels like they were actually made for you, because they were!

My Ash Jeans are a firm favourite, so I’ve linked the full project for those below. You’ll also find the other Ginger Jeans pattern and denims featured in the window individually linked, so you can find your perfect pairing.

It’s all in the details

Jo carried the autumn woodland theme right through the window, with handmade pumpkins created from the fabrics featured in the collection and moons decorated with stars and constellations hanging overhead. I love how these little details bring everything together, making it feel like you’ve wandered into a magical woodland under a starry autumn sky.

I think Jo has captured the autumn details in the new fabrics perfectly with this one.

It has that cosy woodland feeling, with just enough magic from the stars and harvest moonlight. And amongst it all are so many lovely handmade details to hopefully get you thinking about your own autumn sewing.

Thank you Jo for another gorgeous window! ❤️

If you’re in Moseley, make sure you stop for a proper look next time you walk past the shop. And if you’re not nearby, I hope you’ve enjoyed having a little wander through the window with me!
