Renovations - Part Eight

Quite a lot has happened since I last updated you all on how the renovation of the new business premises is coming along. A few things seem to be happening all at the same time as well which is really exciting.

On the agenda this post...

  • the floor! woo hoo!
  • the roof! we'll soon be a bit more water tight!
  • the mock Tudor paneling! I've even been putting some work into that myself!

So,the concrete beams for the floors all arrived earlier this week and they are almost all in place now. So...I actually have a floor to walk on again in the (soon to be) shop and not just dirt!

This is the beams getting laid out......

And now they have blocks in them too! Who'd have known I could be so excited about blocks on a floor!

Then this is the view from the bay window looking back.

Hopefully towards then end of next week there will be the start of a wall to fill that big gap up!

This is a view from the back garden looking toward the front with the floor of the new house in the foreground.

The roof was stripped back on one side today and they are now fixing felt down, putting new lathes on and then replacing all the tiles (with the previous ones).

This is how things were looking when I left at lunch time so hopefully it won't look as bare by the end of the day!

Now the mock Tudor paneling. The carpenters have almost finished repairing and replacing all the old rotten parts and filled in the plaster areas with plywood backing ready to be coated.

The flaky black paint on the beams that were still ok needed to be stripped so they could all be treated again and re-painted. I found out yesterday that they were only ever painted once - and the building was built in 1898! Seems crazy to me!

So I doned my hard hat and armed with a heat gun and a scraper I removed most of the old paint. It was actually quite a fun satisfying job to do. You see progress quite quickly! In some sections they hadn't even undercoated it! So it was a bit harder to remove the paint there. I'm assured that a belt sander will sort that out though.

So here is a section of the paneling before....

And after....

This is the side section of the building so it came off really easily. The front was a different story so the picture doesn't look as impressive. It is a heck of a lot better that it was before though!

I think I'll go back tomorrow for another paint stripping stint and they get the sander on it. Everything is still quite dusty from the roof at the moment so maybe another few weeks before we start to paint it. Hopefully the windows will be almost ready to be put in by then as well.
