A workwear inspired jacket with a traditional British spin, Octobers Sewing Society kit includes everything you need to make the Grainline Studio Thayer Jacket with classic British Millerain, water repellant fabric.
The Thayer Jacket is the perfect layer for your transitional handmade wardrobe. This lighter weight version of the garment, featuring classic British Millerain water resistant fabric it will look great worn with tops and blouses as well as snuggly, cosy jumpers on colder days.
It features a slight A-line shape with two roomy patch pockets and two in-seam yoke pockets. The front bodice princess seams and two piece sleeves ensure a great fit and form. That, along with lots of top stitch detailing and a cosy cotton sherling collar, give this jacket a beautiful finish!
We have designed two colour combinations for this kit - Cabernet Red and Maritime Blue.
Both feature a luxurious British Millerain cotton-rich twill fabric, woven with long staple yarns. The soft brushed finish with a dry feel, water repellant finish means you can risk a quick shower without an umbrella!
We have paired this gorgeous fabric with a traditional check lining fabric, also manufactured here in the UK at the British Millerain Mill. This cotton twill check has a lovely colour palette that compliments the tone of the main outer fabric perfectly.
Finish off the jacket with a cosy, fluffy cotton sherling collar! This gives a lovely detail and contrast to the dark colour tone of the outer fabric and feels so lovely to wear!
This kit contains the US size range of 0-18.
This pattern is designed for a dressmakers B-cup which means that there is 2 inches of difference between the high and full bust measurement. You can find more information on working out your dressmakers cup size in this article. Please note that it is different to bra cup sizes!
Once a kit has been purchased we will be unable to swap the pattern size for another option due to pattern licensing restrictions so please choose your pattern size carefully by looking at the measurement chart in the gallery.
Alongside the purchase of this kit you will receive access to a series of 4 of Laurens exclusive YouTube videos to be used alongside the pattern instructions.
She shares her hints and tips for getting a lovely finish including cutting out checks straight, how to construct a folded buttonhole, top stitching, bagging out the lining, inserting a hanging loop, finishing off the sherling collar neatly by hand and much more!
The videos have over 60 minutes of footage, sectioned out with time stamps/chapters for easy reference and navigation.
The link to the video will be contained in your order confirmation email along with the pdf files, please please file this safely for future reference.
This project is suited to intermediate level dressmakers.
The main challenge posed in this project is the amount of top stitching during the construction of the main front bodice. It’s a satisfying sewing experience, and once you have got past that first stage, the rest of the construction and ‘bagging out’ process where the lining and outer fabric are joined is fairly straightforward and easy to follow, even if you haven’t done it before.
To complete this project successfully you'll need a regular sewing machine along with Lauren's essential recommended sewing tools.
An Overlocker is not required as the garment is lined and therefore finishing off the seam allowances is not required.
A hole punch and buttonhole cutter is useful for opening up the buttonholes, but is not essential.
