The Dawns jeans are the ultimate in high-rise, vintage style. This versatile design, made with non-stretch denim sits at the natural waist line and is fitted through the waist and hips with 3 different styles of fly!
Choose between a zip fly, exposed button fly or regular button fly. The next customisable feature of this pattern is the cut of the leg. Opt for a straight style, tapered, which gives more of a skinny jean feel or cute summery shorts.
The pattern does also include a (very) wide leg option - just note that this option requires more fabric than what we have included in the kit - see kit contents section for more details. If you would like to make the wide leg option you will need to purchase additional fabric.
Finally customise the length of your jeans with a cropped, regular or tall length!
We have sourced the most amazing selvedge denim for this project direct from the Cone Mills Factory. Their denim is renowned for it's superior quality!
This is a 10oz 100% cotton denim and it comes in a raw form. This means it will naturally fade and develop character and wear in over time. For this reason some photographs have been included in the gallery of a pair of jeans, using this exact denim, that have been worn in through frequent wearing and washing over a 2 month period.
In the top tips videos that come with this kit, Lauren will also show you how you can optionally distress your denim with Rit colour remover or bleach to achieve a lighter shade of denim. The mid shade of blue in the photographs above has been achieved by bleaching the denim.
You can see how the lighter shade appears in comparison to the original raw denim and the washed and worn denim in this picture.
This pattern is offered in two size ranges that you can choose from the drop down menu above. These size labels are not directly linked to any sizing such as US, UK etc, it is recommended that you choose a size based on your actual body measurements and don't worry about that size is actually labelled.
The original size range offers sizes 0-20 which is Waist 24" - 39", Hip 33" -49". Find further images of the jeans modelled on the Megan Nielsen website in this link.
The curve size range offers sizes 14-30 which is Waist 32" - 48", Hip 42" - 58". Find further images of the jeans modelled on the Megan Nielsen website in this link.
If you are falling between the two size ranges, then either pattern will work for you, it depends on whether you think you might need to grade between sizes to a size above 20 if you are sitting in the overlap zone.
Alongside the purchase of this kit you will receive access to Lauren's exclusive YouTube video series of 6 videos to be used alongside the pattern instructions.
This in-dept additional instruction will give you lots of additional help, support and advice to help you get a great, professional looking finish on your project.
She shares her personal hints and tips including advice information on using the fabric contained within the kit and how to distress it using rit colour remover and bleach, guidance on denim care, how to choose a size and baste fit, cutting out and preparing to sew, getting professional looking top stitching, sewing on the fly front, how to apply the denim hardware and much much more.
The series of 6 videos has over 2 hours of footage, sectioned out with time stamps/chapters for easy reference and navigation.
The link to the videos will be contained in your order confirmation email along with the pdf files, please please file this safely for future reference.
This difficulty level of this project is graded at 3/5 by Megan Nielsen.
We would suggest that it is for intermediate to advanced level home dressmakers.
Making jeans isn't as complicated as you would think, the instructions that come with the pattern are very detailed, there is a sewalong on the Megan Nielsen website and the top tips videos that come with the kit will give you lots of extra help and support to complete this project.
To complete this project successfully you'll need a regular sewing machine along with Lauren's essential recommended sewing tools.
An Overlocker is useful for finishing off the seam allowances, but is not essential. If you don't have one then you can use a zig zag or overcast stitch on your regular sewing machine.
It is useful of you have a one-step buttonhole setting on your sewing machine, especially if doing the exposed button fly option.
Prym vario pliers are also very useful for applying the jeans buttons and rivets to the jeans. These are linked below.
If you would like a printed copy of the instructions sent out with your kit, in addition to the PDF copy that you will receive, please see the related products below and add it to your cart as a separate product.
Your kit will be wrapped in tissue and beautifully presented in recyclable packaging.
This kit is available for immediate dispatch.
