Dawson Top Kit

The perfect basic top that is easy to wear and style, our February Sewing Society Kit includes everything you need to make the Helen's Closet Dawson Top.

The Dawson Top from Helen's Closet is the ideal piece to build up your handmade wardrobe. Pair it with a smart skirt, layer it under overalls, use it as a warm base layer or simply wear it on its own with jeans. If you've been looking to venture into sewing knit garments for the first time then Dawson is the perfect starting point!

The pattern features three different sleeve lengths (full, half or short) and three neckline options (scooped, crew or mock neck), making a total of nine variations to choose from! This is a pattern that you'll want to make again and again.

The star of this kit is the lightweight French Terry that we've sourced, which is made from sustainable bamboo fibres. It is deliciously soft and feels lovely to wear as it's so smooth next to the skin.

Also included in this kit are some items that will make sewing knits even easier - perfect for those who've been sewing stretchy fabrics for a while and want to try something new. We've added Gutermann's specialist stretchy Maraflex thread as well as Stretchfix, which will make sewing those hems a delight!

The lightweight French Terry included in this kit is available in four timeless colours: muted navy, classic black, marl grey and blush pink.

This bamboo fabric is super soft to the touch and is lightweight with a great drape. It is 95% bamboo with 5% elastane, meaning it has great recovery and bounces back when stretched.

Bamboo is a more sustainable fibre as it grows quickly without the need for pesticides and only needs a small amount of water. Fabric made from bamboo has great wearing comfort as it is naturally moisture wicking and has antibacterial properties. It is also antistatic and doesn't crease easily. In other words, it feels like wearing a hug!

This pattern is available in two size ranges: US 0-22 (B Cup) and US 12-34 (D Cup). If you are unsure about what dressmakers cup size you are, please check out this article and note that it is different to what bra size you might wear.

We think it's worth noting that this pattern has a lot of negative ease - that means it's designed to be fitted close to the body. If you prefer a looser fit we recommend sizing up by 1-2 sizes. There is more guidance on this in Laurens hints and tips video.

If you'd like to see how the Dawson Top looks on many different bodies, check out the Instragram hashtag, here.

She shares her hints and tips on getting a really lovely finish on your garment including cutting out and working with stretchy fabric, how to use stretch Maraflex thread, how to use Stretchfix on hems, how to sew different neckline options and much more!

The video has over 29 minutes of footage, sectioned out with time stamps/chapters for easy reference and navigation.

This pattern is aimed at beginner sewers and is a great introduction for anyone wanting to try knit fabrics for the first time.

To complete this project successfully you'll need a regular sewing machine along with Lauren's essential recommended sewing tools.

An overlocker can be used for sewing the seams, but the garment can easily be made on a regular sewing machine. When using a regular sewing machine you only need a straight stitch function due to the Maraflex thread, which gets used in the top and bobbin.

If you would like a printed copy of the instructions sent out with your kit, in addition to the PDF copy that you will receive, please see the related products below and add it to your cart as a separate product.

Your kit will be wrapped in tissue and beautifully presented in recyclable packaging.

We will aim to dispatch all kits as soon as possible after orders are placed, and we aim to have all kits shipped out by Friday 19th February.

As Sewing Society kits are processed and shipped from a different location to the shop, we are unable to group together kit orders with past or subsequent orders or combine orders retrospectively. Please click here for the full g&g Sewing Society shipping terms.
