Charity Community Sewing Event - Birmingham/Midlands Hub
I am excited to share the news with you that the g&g team and I will be taking part in 'The Big Sew Off' again this year with Lisa Comfort and the Sew Over It team - yay! It's a 24 hour sewing challenge to raise money for the charity Mind, which is an incredible mental heath charity that aims to make sure no one has to face a mental health problem alone. Read on for all the details and how you can get involved.
The Big Sew Off will be taking place from Monday 4th September, 10am until Tuesday 5th September, 10am and the g&g sewing studio above the shop here in Moseley is the designated hub for those looking to support and take part here in the Midlands. We will be sewing from 10am-10pm on Monday 4th September.
I've made a short video explaining how you can get involved and help to raise money for this cause using your interest, knowledge and skills of sewing and dressmaking here in our gorgeous studio. You can also find more information on this great sewing community event in the blog below.
Now in its second year, following a super successful inaugural event that saw the total fundraising pot reach over 10k, The Big Sew Off is a challenge set up and hosted by Lisa Comfort and the Sew Over It team in London that aims to promote the benefits of sewing and dressmaking for your mental health while raising money that supports mental health causes for anyone who needs it here in the UK through the work of the charity Mind.
The Lisa and the Sew Over It team will be sewing for a straight 24 hours from their hub at The New Craft House in London and here at guthrie & ghani we are opening up the sewing studio for 12 hours help the fundraising efforts and there are lots of ways our lovely customers can get involved.
From 10am - 10pm on Monday 4th September Lauren and the g&g team will be hosting an open sewing studio event here at the shop that is themed around sewing with stretch fabrics. We will be sewing garments made from stretch fabrics throughout the 12 hours.
These garments will then be donated to local a local charity - Birmingham and Solihull Womens Aid. The clothes will be used for woman and children who are in refuge.
These garments will then be donated to the charity Give Your Best, who are an award-winning 'tech for good' social enterprise offering the first circular platform of its kind where people and brands donate clothes online, so refugee women and children can shop for free, with the agency and dignity they deserve.
Their catalogue of gifted women's and children's clothes/shoes/accessories can be 'shopped' for free by people in the UK who are refugees, seeking asylum, victims of trafficking, destitute, with no recourse to public funds or with precarious immigration status.
