Level 4 - Advanced Beginner Dressmaker

Learn to Sew Stretch - T-shirts and Jumpers

Do you love making your own clothes but haven't yet tried working with stretchy fabric? Stretchy jersey fabric is so comfy to wear and suitable for lots of different garments so having the skills to tackle this fabric can really widen your project choices and handmade wardrobe!

Choose from the following popular classic patterns in this workshop, depending on what type of garment you would love wearing the most!

The Tilly and the Buttons Billie Sweater - Cool, casual and modern, Billie is an ultra-comfy sweatshirt or sweater dress that you can whip up in an afternoon. It has a relaxed shape, crew neckline and classic trim details. Keep it effortless with cuffed, straight sleeves, or add some drama with on-trend balloon sleeves and deep cuffs.

The Grainline Studio Lark Tee - With a modern, slim fit ideal for layering, the Lark Tee is your closet's new best friend. It's great on its own or under your favourite button up, sweater, or blazer. All four sleeves are interchangeable with each of the necklines resulting in 16 potential different tees in one pattern!

The Jennifer Lauren Handmade Ostara top - Ostara’s classic and comfortable silhouette is the perfect base layer for any outfit. Elbow-length or long sleeves will take you from day to night, through all of the seasons of the year. The elegant wide set neckline is designed to keep bra straps hidden, whether you choose to keep it simple with the U-shaped neckline, or go a little more nostalgic with the sweetheart neckline.

Level 4 - please click here to read the description of this level to ensure it is suited to you.

Please note that the V-neck option in the Lark pattern is the trickiest choice. Only opt for this if you have some experience using stretch before and are a more experienced dressmaker. If you are looking for a further challenge opt for a stripy fabric.

  • 20% discount on supplies required for the workshop (fabric & notions)
  • 10% off any other fabrics and Prym haberdashery purchased on the day of your course
  • Your very own copy of your chosen sewing pattern (the Ostara Top will be a PDF print out and will include future access to the PDF files) If you fall out of the size range of the pattern included, please let us know in advance and we can arrange an alternative for you
  • Use of all machines, tools and equipment
  • Stabilising tape for the shoulder seams
  • Tea/coffee and biscuits (please bring a packed lunch or visit one of the lovely local cafes)

Please get in touch and we can advise on what you'll need to bring, depending on your pattern of choice and which version you would like to make. This will include fabric and matching thread.

Cotton jersey fabrics are generally easier to work with so if you are still fairly new to dressmaking this will be a better choice. If you are generally a more experienced dressmaker, then a viscose or modal jersey fabric will pose an extra challenge.

* Please note - we would recommend you pre-wash all knit fabrics prior to attending the workshop! *

Becca Porter

Becca has been creating with a needle and thread for as long as she can remember and discovered the world of dressmaking in her teens. She quickly became hooked, spending all her free time glued to her machine and developing her skills. Since then she's taught many others to sew too and now teaches online workshops for the pattern company Sew Over It.

Becca enjoys spending time on the details; getting patterns to match, nailing the position of a pocket or producing perfect topstitching. She loves sharing her passion with others, helping them create clothing that they love and feel proud of.

Lorna Hulme

Lorna is forever grateful to her Mum for teaching her to sew as an adult. She fell in love with everything sewing! So much so that she couldn’t bear to keep these skills to herself. Being driven by her passion for inspiring other people to sew, Lorna spent 7 years sharing this love of sewing through teaching others in her own sewing workshop business.

Lorna joined the Guthrie & Ghani team in January 2024 as the Workshops and events coordinator. She is responsible for organising the programme of events and sewing workshops and will be joining the team of sewing tutors too.

Lorna loves all aspects of sewing but her particular passion is dressmaking.

When she’s not sewing she enjoys running, cycling, running around after 2 teenagers and drinking hot chocolate!
