Complete Beginners Sewing Taster

Are you interested in learning to sew but not sure if it's for you? Or would you like to give sewing a try without purchasing a machine? During two evening sessions set on consecutive weeks you will learn the basics of setting up and using a sewing machine and you will sew up a gorgeous cushion cover!

During week 1 you will learn about the different parts of a sewing machine, along with how to thread it up, create a bobbin, select stitches and create a buttonhole. 

During week 2 you will have the opportunity to select your fabric from our Clarke and Clarke upholstery range in store and sew up a simple cushion cover with envelope closure.

You will learn

Get to know a sewing machine

  • The names of the different parts of the sewing machine
  • How to wind the bobbin
  • How to thread the machine
  • How to adjust the tension
  • How to change the stitches
  • How to change the needle

Simple Cushion Cover

  • How to navigate around a piece of fabric
  • How to use a paper pattern/template and pin it onto your fabric
  • How to accurately cut fabric
  • How to press, hem and prepare your fabric for sewing
  • How to sew simple seams
  • How to finish off raw edges
  • How to top stitch

Level 1 - no previous experience required

Lauren Guthrie

Lauren, who is also the founder and owner of guthrie & ghani, has been sewing for most of her life after being taught by her dressmaker mother as a child. She loves to sew her own clothes and clothes for her baby daughter Sophia.
