Sewing Society Production Assistant

We are looking for a new Sewing Society Production Assistant to join our friendly team here in Moseley, Birmingham.

This can be a full or part time position Full-time hours are 40 per week but we will consider anyone looking to commit between 30 to 40 hours per week, spread over 4/5 days. Working days are Monday - Friday 9.00 am - 5.30pm with a 30-minute lunch break.

As the Sewing Society Production Assistant at Guthrie & Ghani, you will play a key role in the preparation and assembly of our monthly dressmaking kits. Your attention to detail and passion for sewing will ensure that our customers receive high-quality, inspiring kits that will invigorate their sew-jo!

We are seeking a dedicated individual who can commit to 30 to 40 hours per week over 5 days (Monday to Friday). We offer flexibility in how these hours are worked, provided they fall between the hours of 9:00 am and 5:30 pm.

Key Responsibilities:

Kit Assembly:

  • Check deliveries of stock
  • Handle heavy fabric bolts and rolls, moving them around the g&g site.
  • Organise and prepare materials such as fabric, thread, patterns, and notions according to kit specifications.
  • Assemble monthly dressmaking kits, ensuring all components are included and properly packaged.

Quality Control:

  • Identify and resolve any issues with kit components, such as fabric faults, defects or missing items.
  • Conduct quality checks on assembled kits to ensure they meet g&g standards.

Packaging and Shipping:

  • Prepare kits for shipping, including labelling and packaging.
  • Coordinate shipping with the g&g order fulfilment team

Process Improvement:

  • Suggest improvements to the kit assembly process to increase efficiency and quality.
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute ideas for new kit designs and offerings.

g&g order fulfilment support:

  • Support the shop floor team in picking, packing and posting online orders
  • Assist shop floor team during busy periods or to help cover staff absences

Working Conditions:

  • Environment: This role will require standing for extended periods, heavy lifting and lone working. This is not a customer-facing role
  • The workshop: Although the workshop is on the g&g site you will be the sole worker in the workshop for extended periods of time.
  • Hours: Part or full time; 30 to 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday

Essential experience:

  • Working in a production environment that involved working efficiently to specific deadlines or timelines

  • Basic sewing knowledge and familiarity with sewing tools and materials.

The tasks and duties in this job description are subject to change at the manager's discretion and the business needs.

This is an entry-level position in the business and the rate of pay will be at the National Living Wage level by your age. Applicants must be 16 years or older.

The interview process will involve a typical interview question and answer discussion with Operations Manager, Kate and business owner, Lauren. Following that you will then be asked to complete a practical taster session to experience what the job will involve daily and will allow us to assess your practical skills in efficiency and accuracy.
