Way back in the days before I had a the shop and was starting to discover sewing again in my adult life, one of the first sewing patterns that inspired me to start using patterns again was the Oliver + S Birthday Party Dress. I found this lovely range of patterns at one of the sewing shows at the NEC and was so pleased to see something modern that I could sew that was different from the more traditional sewing patterns.
At the time I had wanted to start using patterns again but didn’t want to commit to making a whole thing for myself and making a little thing for a baby seemed more manageable, and there was no pressure as I wasn’t making it for anyone in particular. I’ve still got it today my sewing stash – maybe one day I’ll actually have use for it!
Ever since then I’ve followed the Oliver + S brand with great enthusiasm. They were one of the first pattern ranges we stocked when the shop opened back in 2013.
Since then Liesl Gibson who is the founder and designer of Oliver + S has launched the Liesl + Co brand which is a range of patterns for ladies, Straight Stitch Society which is a range of cute gifts and accessories and has collaborated with Butterick to design a range of ladies sewing patterns under the name Lisette.
She also has her own book published called Little Things to Sew, which has 20 accessories and toys for children – I’ve got the book too – it’s so cute!
I’ve been lucky enough to have the chance to get to know Liesl and her husband Todd over the years that I’ve been a stockist and met up with them last year while visiting my family in the states – they are based in New York.
However, last year they moved over the Spain and seen as it’s just a hop skip and jump to Birmingham from there, I’m so excited to say the Liesl is coming to g&g to teach an amazing Get the Perfect Fit Masterclass weekend workshop in March!
After graduating from New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology, Liesl worked as a designer for Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger until 2008 when she launched Oliver + S.
Liesl is as helpful as she is talented and she will teach you how to make and fit a muslin and will provide one on one time with you as well as offer mini tutorials on how alter a garment pattern to fit your specific shape.
During the weekend you will learn
- How to take accurate body measurement
- How to choose the best size for your shape
- How to construct a muslin/toile and make fitting adjustments for example, a full bust and small bust adjustments, adjusting for a sloped or square shoulder, and blending between sizes.
- How to understand and work out what patterns will work best for your body shape
The real benefit of this class is that it will give you the confidence in your own body as well as feel empowered by your new pattern fitting skills!
Spaces are limited on this special once off workshop which is running on Saturday and Sunday the 19th and 20th March.
All the booking details can be found in this link. Or we can process your booking over the phone – just give us a ring on 0121 449 8419.
I know it will be a great weekend and I’d be there myself if I didn’t have a big pregnant tummy at the moment!
