The great thing about having sewing and dressmaking as a hobby is that there is always fun tools and gadgets you can expand your tool set with no matter how experienced you are!
So whether you need to buy a gift for some one who sews the Christmas, or need to drop hints to your loved ones - I've got lots of ideas from stocking fillers to bigger investment items that will boost your sew-jo and jazz up your sewing tool box!
See my ideas up close and find out how to use them in my latest Youtube video!
If you are at or near the start of your sewing journey and need the basics to get started then you could try out out Prym Love starter sets. They contain all the essentials you'll need in a handy box all in one!
Or keep the tools you have already collected neat and tidy in a lovely new sewing box!
Having really good fabric scissors makes cutting out your fabric a joy! Once you feel the fabric slide through nice sharp scissors like a knife through hot butter, your fabric scissors will become the most prize possession in your sewing tool kit - NOT to be used by anyone else for cutting anything but fabric!
There are several choices to look out for - length of blade being the first one. We have 21cm, 23cm and 25cm blades. All cut fabric well so the choice may come down to how heavy/light the blades are and the price!
We also have either regular blades that can be sharpened and 'Xact' microserration blades. These have tiny little teeth which grip the fabric as you cut given you more control on slippery fabrics like viscose, rayon and silk and more grip for cutting through lots of layers of thicker fabric like wool or denim.
The (less often used) pinking shears are good for a quick and easy way to minimise fraying on raw edges of fabric.
A fun way to keep your pins under control is by using magnets as you work and sew! Great for the cutting table to help avoid spills and great for keeping by the sewing machine so pins don't end up scattered everywhere and all over the floor!
Our exclusive g&g wooden pin magnets are my top pick! Made locally in Birmingham using sustainable European Beechwood, the look lovely, feel nice and soft and have grooves at the side for an easy pick up!
A great way to finish off your lovingly handmade garments and projects with a special touch is to add a woven label!
We stock a lovely variety of Kylie and the Machine woven labels with lots of different designs, sayings and mantras to stitch into your make!
Store them neatly in one of their special tins and bump up your collection with an exciting advent calendar that includes 66 woven labels and 2 iron on patches! I'll be sharing the contents each day in December on Instagram as I open the doors up - I can't wait!
Adding snaps, poppers and fasteners to your projects can make them look super professional and that easiest way to apply them is with the Prym Vario Pliers!
They are compatible with a huge range of Prym products from plastic snaps and jersey snaps for kids clothes to anorak snaps, rivets and jeans buttons!
Get the Vario Pliers on their own and pick a few fasteners to go with it! We also have handy storage cases and boxes for all the bits and pieces too!
Even when you think you have all the things you need to make sewing fun - there is always something else to try out!
Whether it's a new technique or way of doing something, or simply reorganising your supplies - this selection of items will spruce up your sewing tool kit!
